"Inanay" is thought to have originated among the Indigenous Peoples of Australia, most likely from the Torres Strait Islands. Slight variations may be the result of the song traveling in what is known in Australia as "songlines," an intricate way of capturing ancestral history and land navigation through melody and rhythm. The language-possibly Yorta Yorta-and meaning are unclear, although some believe the Lyrics refer to the goanna, an Australian monitor lizard.
