Play parties arose in communities where dancing and playing musical instruments were banned. “Games” were allowed, however, and resourceful teenagers found ways to socialize and “dance” together by adapting songs and incorporating movement cues into the lyrics (i.e.,”circle to the left “). Nowadays, play party songs like this one are used primarily for young children’s activities.
